Course Coordinator: Dr Susan Shannon
Strong horizontality composition of Pelli’s 1984 high end 56-storey residential tower, Goodwin and Stone’s 1939 white marble clad building, and Johnson’s 1964 steel structured East Wing. The circular cut outs on the rectangular roof of MoMA first permanent building juxtapose with the horizontality profile on site.
View at MoMA Film entrance | Goodwin and Stone design was highly influenced by the basic geometric form of ‘international style’ which emerged as a ‘modern’ movement in 1930s. The characters consist of the use of smooth surface, no ornamentation, and glazed windows.
53rd Street entrance to the museum | The site constraint is the street (not wide, about 3 lanes width, limit space for grand steps). Therefore, the main entrances are intentionally designed to be hidden and subtle. This is to convey the message of ‘modern art is a part of everyday life’, people could go pass by or pass through it.
